Good for business. Good for all of us.

We measure success not only by what we produce, but by what we return — to the land, the community, and the world we share. This is not a sustainability report. It is simply how we think about our work.

Environment

Wood residues that would otherwise be discarded complete a full material cycle. Our bio-oil lifecycle emits significantly less CO&sub2; than any fossil alternative — verified and traceable under EU RED III methodology.

  • ~82% lower lifecycle CO&sub2; vs fossil heating oil
  • Zero deforestation — residues only, no primary wood
  • Near-zero waste: biochar by-product has soil and energy uses
  • Local supply chain minimizes transport emissions

Community & local economy

Our plant creates direct and indirect employment in the Lieksa region. The sawmill partnership keeps value local. Revenue stays here rather than flowing to fossil exporters elsewhere.

  • Direct plant employment in the Lieksa region
  • Raw material sourced locally — revenue stays regional
  • Strengthens the sawmill’s residue value chain
  • Reduces regional dependence on imported energy

A shared bio-based future

Domestic biochemical production reduces dependence on imported fossil energy. Every litre of bio-oil we produce is a step toward a more self-sufficient, lower-carbon industrial base — and every development in our process opens the door to new bio-based materials and chemicals.

  • Contributes to EU 2035 carbon neutrality targets
  • Reduces fossil import dependency
  • Supports EU Green Deal and RED III national targets
  • Platform for future bio-based chemical derivatives

The forest we belong to

Finland’s forests cover over 70% of the country’s land area. They are not background scenery, but a living system - shaping climate, water cycles, biodiversity, and the identity of the communities around them. Generations have lived alongside the forest — working it, walking it, finding quiet in it.

We do not take this lightly. GreenChem uses only certified wood residues — material that has already served its primary purpose as structural timber and would otherwise have limited value. We do not harvest. We collect what remains. The circle closes quietly.

Our raw material sourcing follows PEFC or FSC chain-of-custody certification. This is not a marketing position. It is a founding commitment — and the condition under which we believe this kind of production has a right to exist.
